KELOWNA, B.C. – The BC Cancer Foundation’s 2016 Discovery Luncheon - Kelowna raised an amazing $100,000 in support of an expanded treatment program for women with gynaecological cancers at the BC Cancer Agency Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre for the Southern Interior.
The sixth annual Discovery Luncheon celebrated the importance of discovery research happening each year in Kelowna at the BC Cancer Agency Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre for the Southern Interior.
“The generosity of BC Cancer Foundation donors continues to provide new hope for patients and their families,” said Sarah Roth, BC Cancer Foundation President & CEO. “Today, we celebrate advancing care for women with gynaecological cancers not only in the Southern Interior, but throughout the entire province.”
Thanks to the generosity of BC Cancer Foundation donors, over the past six years the Discovery Luncheon – Kelowna has supported the latest cutting edge research and enhancements to patient care taking place at the Centre for the Southern Interior.
Kelowna resident Sharon Daley was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2011 and spoke at the event.
“I truly believe in research, and I am here today because of it,” Sharon said. “This event will help save the women in our lives and in this room today.”
Funds raised at this year’s event will help ensure local patients have access to the latest in gynaecological cancer treatment and care.
“The Vaginal Interstitial HDR Brachytherapy Program is the only of its kind in British Columbia, treating patients from the Interior but also from the entire province,” said Dr. François Bachand, Department Head, Radiation Oncology, BC Cancer Agency Centre for the Southern Interior. “It is the most precise and effective way of treating patients with vaginal tumours. We are working to expand the program, allowing us to treat all patients with vaginal cancers and personalize their treatment to a new level."
No stranger to philanthropy, Tom Budd of The Thomas Alan Budd Foundation once again showed generous support with a matching gift of $30,000 at the event.
Special thanks to event sponsors BMO Bank of Montreal and Sentes Automotive Group.
