Breakthrough Research

Found: One in Three Billion
BC Cancer Foundation donors fund ground-breaking Ovarian Cancer discovery.

More than150 BC Cancer Foundation guests gathered at the BC Cancer Agency Research Centre Tuesday night to celebrate the announcement of a ground-breaking Ovarian cancer research discovery.

The BC Cancer Agency’s Dr. David Huntsman and his Ovarian Cancer Research Program team have made a “game-changing” discovery about ovarian cancer. They have discovered that there appears to be a single spelling mistake in the genetic code of granulosa cell tumours, a rare and often untreatable form of ovarian cancer. This means that out of the three billion nucleotide pairs that make up the genetic code of the tumour, one the same one in every tumour sample is incorrect. Their work represents the first specific diagnostic tool and clear path to developing much-needed treatments for ovarian cancer.

The discovery, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, marks the beginning of a new era of cancer genomics.

We are proud to say that the research was directly funded by BC Cancer Foundation donors from the Foundation’s 2007 Inspiration Gala, which raised a record total of $1.9 million in one evening. Lead donors included Don Listwin and the Canary Foundation, a U.S.-based charity dedicated to research into the early detection of ovarian cancer.

BC Cancer Foundation donors also provided the start-up funding that made OvCaRe possible, in a joint fundraising campaign with the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation.

Thank you! It was your support that made this ground-breaking research discovery happen right here in British Columbia. The Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OvCaRe) was co-founded by Dr. Huntsman and Dr. Dianne Miller, also of the BC Cancer Agency. It is a unique, multi-disciplinary team of BC clinicians and research scientists who are recognized leaders in ovarian cancer research.

This discovery creates huge possibilities for the OvCaRe team to develop better diagnostics and treatments for Ovarian and many other cancers. To be part of this future research, donate here.
