Cancer Awareness Pins
Ten years ago, Victoria businessman Danilo Danzo, made a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation’s Daring to Believe Campaign to help build the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre. When he designated it to the CT scanner, he had no idea that his gift would benefit him so personally.
Within four years of that gift, Danilo became a cancer patient and received treatment for stomach cancer. Then, four years later, his wife Jane, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Danilo and Jane Danzo believe they owe their lives to early detection, the local medical community, and the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre. Both Jane & Danilo are now cancer-free.
From the time of her diagnosis, Jane was determined to identify an initiative that would promote cancer awareness amongst her fellow British Columbians and at the same time, raise money for the BC Cancer Agency’s Cancer Centres in the province.
Shortly after her surgery, she began working on the idea of a quality piece of jewellery as a means to achieve her goal, and enlisted the help of a retired Victoria jeweller, Rolf Schmidt, who had lost his only child to cancer in 2007.
Three months after her diagnosis, Jane had developed her plan. She would offer for sale an 18K yellow gold/jewelled pin. Using the ribbon motif, there would be a selection of 5 different models (3 unisex), each hand made and available by custom order.
With the BC Cancer Foundation’s endorsement of her plan, Jane launched her initiative, The Cancer Awareness Pin (CAP) during the last week of her radiation treatment.
Whether it is worn as a symbol of support, remembrance or courage, the pin serves as a reminder to those who see it that cancer is amongst us and that early detection can be life-saving.
Pins are made to order. Please email: thecancerawarenesspin@shaw.ca
All prices are in Canadian dollars. Cheques are payable to The CAP Fund.
Purchasers of the pin are eligible for partial charitable tax receipts issued by the BC Cancer Foundation (Charitable Business # 1188118434RR0001)
