The matching gift deadline has passed, but you can still support vital research into cancer prevention.

A cancer diagnosis can devastate a family, steal precious time, and take away loved ones far too early. But current research indicates that a staggering 50% of cancers could be avoided altogether with lifestyle changes, and as our knowledge of the causes of cancer continues to increase, the number of preventable cancers will continue to rise.

That's why William and John McCarthy generously matched donations to the BC Cancer Foundation dollar-for-dollar this fall!

With a growing and aging population, it is estimated that the number of new cancer diagnoses in B.C. will grow by 40% over the next decade. That's why BC Cancer urgently needs to ramp up its prevention efforts:

Sleep Study

Dr. Parveen Bhatti has joined the team as Director of Prevention to help bring all the incredible prevention research together. Dr. Bhatti is also a senior scientist, getting ready to launch a clinical trial to test melatonin supplements as a natural way of reducing the risk of cancer in shift workers who are at an increased risk of developing cancer due to their sleep-wake patterns.

Ovarian Cancer

Dr. David Huntsman and his team previously discovered key mutations that underpin several types of ovarian cancer. Their current research is focused on developing new tools to clearly and quickly identify key risk factors for ovarian cancer. By offering preventative strategies, they're aiming to cut the incidence in half!

Lung Cancer

Dr. Stephen Lam is studying "never-smokers" who develop lung cancer, looking for patterns in life and family history, and analyzing environmental factors to better understand how their cancer was triggered. This information may be critical for identifying people who should be getting screened for early signs of disease, and Dr Lam is aiming to launch a clinical trial for at-risk individuals to study if this type of cancer can be prevented.

With your support, BC Cancer scientists can better understand the root causes of cancer, and how we can prevent it in the first place.
