May 11, 2010, Victoria, B.C. - Customers, staff and guests were on hand at Cook Street Village’s Pharmasave today to celebrate a $50,000 gift to the BC Cancer Foundation’s Inspire the World campaign from Bob Mehr Compounding Pharmacies.
“As a pharmacist, I see numerous cancer patients a day,” said Mehr, owner of 12 pharmacies in B.C. “I believe it is crucial that patients and their families feel supported psychologically and emotionally, as well as medically. I know the funds raised by the Inspire the World campaign will ensure that patients receive the supportive care they require before, during and after treatment.”
The BC Cancer Foundation’s $10 million Inspire the World campaign will create a state-of-the-art patient and family support centre, a predictive cancer research centre and a radiation innovation wing within the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre.
“We are very grateful that Bob Mehr Compounding Pharmacies has committed $50,000 and launched a two-month, in-store promotion during April and May to raise awareness for the Inspire the World campaign,” said Laura Walsh, Inspire the World Campaign Director.
A portion of the proceeds from specific vitamins and supplements sold will go towards the campaign. Additionally, Mehr is selling Inspire the World Stars which customers can take home or display in the stores.
“My grandfather passed away from cancer in 2003—within six months of his diagnosis. During his treatment, he was emotionally strong, but it was very difficult for me and my family. We were the ones who were falling apart and needed the support,” said Kathryn Davies, an employee at Bob Mehr’s Shawnigan Lake pharmacy.
“One in three Vancouver Islanders will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Thus, many of my staff across the Island have been touched by cancer. As a team, we felt it is important to contribute to and promote Inspire the World. Everyone is very excited to be a part of Inspire the World and give back to the community,” explained Mehr.
The BC Cancer Foundation’s Inspire the World capital campaign will transform the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre through a significant building expansion and renovation as the existing facility is operating at capacity.
