SURREY, B.C., August 24, 2019 – The Ride to Conquer Cancer Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation announced 2,100 Riders helped raise $9.1 million for the BC Cancer Foundation as the 11th annual Ride commenced in Surrey at the Cloverdale Rodeo & Exhibition Grounds this morning.

In 11 years, the B.C. Ride has raised over $105.1 million to support more than 47 world-leading research projects underway at BC Cancer, advancing care and providing hope to over 77,000 people facing cancer across British Columbia. The B.C. Ride is the province’s largest fundraising event.

“In 11 epic years, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has played an essential role in breaking down cancer and saving lives in our province. With thousands of cyclists and tens of thousands of donors, the Ride brings us the hope that together, we are closer to conquering cancer,” says Sarah Roth, president and CEO, BC Cancer Foundation.

“We Ride and raise funds to honour those currently facing the disease, for those we’ve lost and to fuel the work of the incredible scientists and clinicians at BC Cancer. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all riders, donors, volunteers, crew, sponsors and supporters for your commitment as we cycle together to change outcomes,” adds Roth.

The annual event draws thousands of participants and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise for months to participate. The two-day, 200-kilometre Ride will journey through the Fraser Valley from Surrey to Hope, with an overnight in Chilliwack.

“Every year I ride for cancer I am reminded of all that BC Cancer and its staff has done for me and how lucky I am to be alive. I have what I refer to as a dream team of doctors working to make my life as healthy and productive as possible,” said Rick Davis, cancer survivor from White Rock, British Columbia. “If it weren’t for all of the support I received from BC Cancer and its staff, I wouldn’t be here today sharing my story,” adds Davis.

Wheaton Precious Metals became the presenting sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2014. Their team, The Silver Bullets, has raised more than $1.5 million in ten years. Sponsorship funds donated by Wheaton Precious Metals enable Ride participants to directly support the world-leading work of experts at BC Cancer.

“As presenting sponsor, Wheaton Precious Metals is honoured to be a part of the Ride and its many years of success and outstanding impact,” says Randy Smallwood, President and CEO of Wheaton Precious Metals and captain of The Silver Bullets.

“We’d like to congratulate and thank all Riders who are changing outcomes for patients and their families each time they hit the pavement and pedal every kilometre with pride. Wheaton Precious Metals is committed to supporting the breakthrough research and life-saving care at BC Cancer, and we look forward to riding with you all again in 2020,” Smallwood added.

Next year’s dates have been released: the 12th annual Ride to Conquer Cancer Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals will be held on August 29 and 30th, 2020.
