VANCOUVER, B.C. Following an unveiling ceremony yesterday evening, the BC Cancer Research Centre at 675 W 10th Ave. in Vancouver has been officially renamed the L.J. Blackmore Cancer Research Centre, named for the late Leon Judah Blackmore and the Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation.

Following remarks from Sarah Roth (President & CEO, BC Cancer Foundation), Dr. Kim Chi (Chief Medical Officer, BC Cancer), Nicola Brailsford (CEO & Trustee, Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation) and Dr. Stephen Lam (BC Cancer), there was an official ribbon cutting and unveiling of the new sign to celebrate this remarkable community investment.

Leon and the Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation have been consistent generous supporters of BC Cancer and the BC Cancer Foundation over the past two decades.

“Leon and his Foundation’s philanthropic leadership brings hope to patients and their families facing cancer across the province today, and fuels transformative innovations in care tomorrow in B.C. and beyond,” says Sarah Roth, President and CEO, BC Cancer Foundation. “The building now stands as a symbol to the power of philanthropy and to the confidence and conviction the community has in BC Cancer.”

To date, Leon and the Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation have donated $18.9 million to BC Cancer Foundation to fund life-saving cancer research in genomics, including BC Cancer’s Personalized Onco-Genomics program, and lung cancer.

“In the L.J. Blackmore Cancer Research Centre, fundamental cancer biology discoveries have been translated into clinical treatments, and have saved the lives of many people,” says Dr. Kim Chi, Chief Medical Officer, BC Cancer. “Leon was curious, smart, driven and dedicated. These traits embody the spirit of our clinical and laboratory researchers at BC Cancer and the BC Cancer Research Centre.”
