2017 Inspiration Gala

The BC Cancer Foundation’s 2017 Inspiration Gala is raising funds for the Hereditary Cancer Program at the BC Cancer Agency on Saturday, November 4th at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. This elegant evening for 500 guests includes a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, entertainment, raffle, live auction, and silent auction.

Last year’s event raised $3.05 million for NETRACER: Compounds to Conquer Cancer, and cumulatively over the past twelve years, Inspiration Galas have raised over $25 million for breakthrough lung, pancreatic, brain, ovarian, breast, lymphoid, immunotherapy and colorectal cancer research, as well as the Personalized Medicine Project and Personalized Onco-Genomics Program (POG) at the BC Cancer Agency. Through the Inspiration Gala, BC Cancer Foundation donors make contributions to leading-edge research that has a direct impact in improving cancer care for patients in B.C. The 2012 Inspiration Gala won “Best Fundraising Event” in Canada at the Canadian Event Industry Awards. The BC Cancer Foundation is the largest charitable funder of cancer research in this province.

Identifying hereditary cancer risk empowers individuals and families to stop cancer before it starts, with swift and effective prevention strategies. Previously thought to account for only a few of cancer diagnoses, BC Cancer researchers have recently proven that hereditary cancers actually account for 10% of all cancer diagnoses and span not just a few, but all cancer types.

Implementing a provincial hereditary screening program for all patients with advanced cancer at the time of diagnosis will save lives. Making this the standard of care for all cancer patients in B.C. will bring hope to families across generations and dramatically increase chances for survival. Now is the time to take a big leap forward to treat and prevent hereditary cancers by harnessing precision oncology for families.

How Your Gift Helps

Hereditary Cancer Program

The BC Cancer Foundation aims to raise $3.1 million at this year’s Inspiration Gala to support BC Cancer’s Hereditary Cancer Program (HCP).

Previously thought to account for only a small number of diagnoses, hereditary cancers actually account for up to 10% of all cancers and span not just a few, but all cancer types.

Gala support will enable the HCP team to launch a pilot study on the benefits of up-front testing for hereditary mutations—for all patients with advanced cancer, at the time of diagnosis. By identifying all individuals and families who may have a hereditary mutation, BC CAN dramatically increase their chances for survival.

$3.1 million in philanthropic support is urgently needed to:

  • Create a rapid genetic testing system that will streamline resources and dramatically speed-up test turnaround times.
  • Expand genetic testing to include patients with more types of cancer and to provide genetic testing options to members of high-risk families whose relatives have passed away. Specialized tools and resources will educate health care providers province-wide on the importance of genetic testing and its implications.
  • Focus on high-risk families with hereditary cancers with the goal of detecting cancers earlier or preventing them completely. A mutation follow-up program and outcomes unit, as well tools such as a digital app reminding patients when they are due to be screened will ensure the needs of high-risk families are addressed before their health is affected.

By acting now on new knowledge of cancer and translating research findings into clinical practice, we can change the story for thousands of British Columbians. We invite you to join us in harnessing precision oncology for families at the 2017 Inspiration Gala.
