Eugene Lingan Bahia was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004. Even as he underwent many rounds of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, he was committed to helping support others facing the disease. As his wife, Joanna Paula, says “my husband knew he had a purpose, that became clear when he had cancer. He created something positive out of this nasty disease, an awareness to let people know that cancer is a word, not a sentence.”
Between chemotherapy sessions, Eugene rode in the Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2009 and 2010. “It brought more meaning to his life. It was a chance for a change, a chance for a cure. It brought together his passion for biking and a chance to make a difference.” Eugene died on June 19, 2011, Father’s Day, at the age of 33, leaving behind his two sons Eugene Paulo (4) and Julian Gabriel (2). “Although it is too late for him there are still hundreds of thousands more who need help. That's why I signed up for the 2012 Ride – to continue what my husband started. The fight against cancer needs to end so that one day, no other family should go through what we did again.”

Ride to Conquer Cancer

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a powerful movement – one of hope, healing, celebration, and optimism. As a unique fundraising event that supports groundbreaking research at the BC Cancer Agency, the potential for Ride dollars to change the cancer landscape in BC and beyond is immense.
Since its inception in 2009, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised an amazing $27.9 million in support of cancer research in BC; research that is focused on advancing new understandings of cancer for the development of improved treatment options.
This year, 2,879 cyclists joined together to raise a record $11.1 million to support leading-edge research at the BC Cancer Agency. The Foundation is extremely grateful to all the volunteers, crew members, riders and their supporters.
Philanthropy is the fuel that keeps the BC Cancer Agency’s research engine running, and the money raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will have a significant impact on cancer patients and their families throughout the province. With philanthropy and research working together, we believe we can achieve our vision of a world free from cancer.
