Your donations support innovative cancer research and compassionate enhancements to patient care.

For the first time ever, we demonstrated the power of using genome sequencing in a clinical setting. By sequencing a patient’s rare tumour, an individualized treatment plan was created based on the tumour’s genetic makeup. Not only was this a world-first, but it’s an excellent indication of how genomics can be translated to the clinic.

Philanthropy accelerates the rate at which new discoveries and research projects take place here at the BC Cancer Agency. Initial seed funding from donors can be multiplied many times over through leveraging with external funding sources. For example, your original $25 million investment in the Genome Sciences Centre over a decade ago has translated into more than $270 million in grants. Your dollars at work have resulted in us being one of the top five genome sequencing centres in the world.

    Funding Priorities

BC Cancer Foundation funding has been an important lever to help attract world-class clinicians and scientists, help with the set-up costs for major research programs as well as providing support to research across the province. The Priorities Advisory Group (PAG) consists of senior members of the BC Cancer Agency and BC Cancer Foundation. The group’s role is to ensure Foundation funding remains aligned to Agency needs through identifying and approving proposed fundraising priorities and requests.

To establish a Centre of Excellence in Breast Cancer Research that will: promote and develop core strengths; provide education to the next generation of physicians and researchers; disseminate research findings; act as a focal point for patient inquiries.

Multidisciplinary approach to improving outcomes for ovarian clear cell carcinoma patients. This initiative will link the clinical resources developed through OvCaRe, the sequencing capacity of the GSC and the drug development capacity of the Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) and the NanoMedicine Research Group (NMRG).

To provide detection of genetic abnormalities in malignant cells of patients with AML and MDS.

Provide support that will ensure the acquisition of up to two DNA sequencing instruments from Western Economic Diversification Canada, which would support the ongoing work of the GSC.

Through a competitive application process, this fund will provide support for the acquisition of small equipment needs across British Columbia

As part of the BrainCare BC project, establish a Professorship in translational brain cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency. This world-leading clinician scientist will greatly expand the research program at BrainCare BC.

To establish a Centre of Excellence in Breast Cancer Research that will: promote and develop core strengths; provide education to next generation of physicians and researchers; disseminate research findings; act as focal point for patient inquiries.

Establish 6 BC Cancer Agency clinician scientist awards (each with a 5 year term) to develop and sustain clinically relevant research programs.

Province-wide cancer prevention initiative that will include northern British Columbia.

Joint Simon Fraser University and BC Cancer Agency Endowed Chair to raise awareness and conduct research in the emerging field of cancer survivorship.

Establish clinics at various sites around British Columbia to allow for easier testing of BC Generations Project participants.

Research into the effects of a low carbohydrate/high protein diet on preventing the incidence and progression of cancer. The aim of the project is to disseminate results throughout the medical community for improvements to patient care and education.
