April 15, 2010, Vancouver, B.C. – Lunchtime crowds were treated to a brief spectacle today as teams of runners dressed in little more than oversized underwear raced around the Vancouver Art Gallery building to kick off the BC Cancer Foundation’s 2010 Underwear Affair® presented by Mark’s Work Wearhouse.

The BC Cancer Foundation’s 5th annual Underwear Affair takes place on July 10th, to raise funds and awareness for cancers below the waist, such as colorectal, prostate, and ovarian. Talking about these cancers is still considered taboo among some families and communities, so they often receive less attention and funding than they deserve.

“The Underwear Affair aims to lift these taboos with a fun approach to fundraising,” said BC Cancer Foundation Board member Monika Deol. “The BC Cancer Foundation is grateful to all those who help us get the word out, and we encourage everyone to do their part by going to www.uncoverthecure.org and registering today!”

The Underwear Affair is a party from start to finish: many participants wear creative costumes; cheering supporters and a street-party atmosphere accompany them on their five kilometre walk or 10 kilometre run, and the EXPOsed afterparty features live entertainment, cocktails and music.

“The Underwear Affair not only raises awareness, but provides important new funding for research into all these cancers” said BC Cancer Agency medical oncologist Dr. Hagen Kennecke. “Our BC Cancer Agency researchers and clinicians truly appreciate the support that this event provides for our work.”
