Vancouver, B.C. – Participants brought their a-game for a good cause at the BC Cancer Foundation’s Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer on September 14th. Funds raised, through the generosity of event participants, will support breakthrough research at the BC Cancer Agency where researchers are changing the way cancer is prevented, detected and treated.
There was something for everyone at this unforgettable and inspirational event. The day was filled with live musical acts, celebrity appearance from lead vocalist for Spirit of the West John Mann, country singer Aaron Prichett, Canucks alumni Cliff Ronning and Kirk Mclean, a beer garden, an interactive games zone and, of course – lots of Road Hockey! Throughout the full day of friendly road hockey matches, hockey enthusiasts celebrated their efforts to make a difference in the lives of those diagnosed with cancer in BC today and into the future.
“Hockey unites people from all walks of life in a common passion for victory. Cancer, too, can rally masses to conquer the disease that affects too many of our loved-ones. Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer sees a love of hockey merge with a united goal of supporting research that’s stick-handling us toward a world free from cancer,” says Douglas Nelson, President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation.
“I don’t think there is anyone on the team or walking the streets who hasn’t been impacted by cancer,” says participant Mike Schaab, Portfolio Manager with Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel. Schaab, who lost his mother to cancer in 2006, has participated in many cancer-related fundraising events over the years and says Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer is special to him because it’s an activity he enjoys, having grown up playing hockey, both on the ice and road.
Over 24,000 British Columbians will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer will advance research, leading to new discoveries that will shape early detection technology and treatment for cancer in the very near future.
