Bringing Cancer Care Closer to Home in the Fraser Region
In 2024, the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society pledged to match donations, dollar-for-dollar, up to an incredible $1 million, to support the development of the new BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre.
The BC Cancer Foundation is pleased to announce the $1 million donation match has been fully met — raising $2 million toward the new centre, thanks to the generosity of over 1,300 donors.
BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre will:
- Include ambulatory care rooms, chemotherapy chairs, oncology pharmacy, radiation therapy, and PET/CT machines
- Feature space for leading-edge clinical trials to advance vital research across all cancer types
- Greatly increase BC Cancer’s capacity in the Fraser region and ensure families have timely access to world-class cancer care close to home
Firefighters know firsthand the impacts of cancer, as the disease is the leading cause of line of duty deaths in our profession. We are honoured to match donations and hope our community will join us in supporting the BC Cancer Burnaby McCarthy Centre, which will be a pillar of hope in our city.

Our Generous Donors
The McCarthy family’s dedication to BC Cancer and the city of Burnaby dates back five decades. Their multi-generational legacy of supporting the BC Cancer Foundation has culminated in over $30 million to help fund cancer research, education and care in British Columbia.
Their most recent gift of $5 million is in support of a new BC Cancer centre in Burnaby. As the BC Cancer Foundation Board’s Immediate Past Chair, John McCarthy says, “This donation is not just an investment in the healthcare infrastructure of our region, but also a tribute to my great grandfather’s and my parents’ belief in the power of community. We hope it inspires others to support the vital work of the BC Cancer Foundation, ensuring that the residents of Burnaby and beyond have access to world-class cancer care and treatment.”
In recognition of the McCarthy family’s enduring generosity, the new cancer centre in Burnaby will be named BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre.
