Mid Island Co-op

The Campaign

Mid Island Co-op has generously pledged to match your donations, up to $1 million, to support the new BC Cancer centre in Nanaimo.

Over 6,000 cancer cases are diagnosed on Vancouver Island each year and the number is increasing due to an aging and growing population. The new BC Cancer centre in Nanaimo will bring care closer to home for local communities and increase Vancouver Island’s capacity for treatments.

With over half of Vancouver Island’s population residing north of the Malahat, thousands of local patients travel to BC Cancer – Victoria for essential cancer care services, including oncology consultations, radiation therapy and PET/CT imaging scans. The emotional, physical and financial burden of travel to Victoria is tremendous and often complicated by treatment side-effects, wildfires or extreme weather.

The new BC Cancer centre in Nanaimo will house four linear accelerator radiation vaults, completing an estimated 20,000 treatment visits per year. Radiation requires highly specialized infrastructure and staffing only available at BC Cancer centres. It will also include a PET/CT scanner, CT simulator and an oncology ambulatory care unit for outpatient exams and consults.

Help Bring Cancer Care Closer to Home

Help bring a brand-new BC Cancer centre to Nanaimo and bring cancer care closer to home for patients like Joanne Falvai. When she was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2020, Joanne faced a daily commute from Qualicum Beach to BC Cancer – Victoria to receive treatment.

But after surgery, she quickly realized driving four hours every day was physically and psychologically impossible. So, she and her family had to temporarily relocate to Victoria —a move made possible by community support.

Joanne received outstanding care at BC Cancer – Victoria but being away from home was tough. This is why bringing a new BC Cancer centre to Nanaimo is so crucial. It will offer comprehensive cancer care, including radiation therapy, a PET/CT scanner, a CT simulator, and an oncology ambulatory care unit, right here in our community.

To make this vision a reality, we need your support. Together, we can bring world-class cancer care closer to home for our up-Island communities!
