Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society has announced they will match donations up to an incredible $1 million to the BC Cancer Foundation’s $10 million fundraising campaign to support the development of the BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre.
The campaign officially launched at a reception last week recognizing the McCarthy family. The McCarthy family, including BC Cancer Foundation’s Board Chair John McCarthy, donated $5 million to kickstart the campaign.
In a surprise moment at the event, Scott Alleyn, President of the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society, took to the podium to make the announcement that was met with tremendous cheers and applause.
“Firefighters know firsthand the impacts of cancer, as the disease is the leading cause of line of duty deaths in our profession,” says Scott Alleyn. “We are honoured to match donations and hope our community will join us in supporting the BC Cancer Burnaby McCarthy Centre, which will be a pillar of hope in our city.”
“This is fulfilling exactly what my family hoped our gift would do – inspire the community,” says John McCarthy. “We are incredibly grateful for the Burnaby Firefighters’ generosity and Scott’s announcement is a moment I will never forget.”
Despite being less than a week old, the Foundation’s campaign for BC Cancer – Burnaby is already past the halfway mark. Now the community has the chance to double the impact of their donation to the new BC Cancer centre, closing the gap even further.
