Vancouver, B.C. – The BC Cancer Foundation announced a record $50.4 million fundraising year at their 77th annual general meeting, held June 21, 2012. The record funds raised are thanks to the partnership of more than 110,000 donors throughout British Columbia and will support innovative cancer research and enhancements to patient care at the BC Cancer Agency.
Douglas Nelson, BC Cancer Foundation President & CEO says, “Hope and optimism are creating change at the BC Cancer Agency and research is working thanks to the 110,000 donors who partner with us to spark cancer discoveries. We are in a golden age of research and the excitement can be felt throughout B.C.”
The BC Cancer Foundation’s annual board elections welcomed six new directors to the board: Robert Conconi, Doug Holtby, Michael Kennedy, Andrea J. Shaw, Andrew Sweeney, and Jane Young.
“I am pleased to welcome these business leaders as new members to our board,” said Jess Ketchum, BC Cancer Foundation Board Chair. “We look forward to building on our momentum and supporting the leading-edge research at the BC Cancer Agency, which is helping more people experience the ‘new normal’ of life after cancer.”
The BC Cancer Foundation welcomes the following new directors to their board:
- Robert Conconi is a retired entrepreneur and successful businessman;
- Doug Holtby, FCA, is Chairman of Silver Wheaton Corp. and Vice-Chairman and Lead Director of Goldcorp Inc.;
- Michael Kennedy is Vice President and regional Leader of design firm, Stantec in B.C.;
- Andrea J. Shaw is Founder & Managing Partner of TwentyTen Group in Vancouver and Toronto;
- Andrew Sweeney is Vice President & Portfolio Manager at Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management; and
- Jane Young is Director of Human Resources at Peterson Group.
Nelson adds, “We look forward to a new year and welcome the new and returning directors to our board. We are grateful to have such an outstanding board of community leaders who will help us to carry this momentum and make a difference in the lives of the more than 24,000 British Columbians who will be affected by cancer this year.”
