By day, Brad Hubbard, leader of patient safety, quality & accreditation at BC Cancer – Victoria, is dedicated to improving the cancer journey for patients. After hours, he continues that mission on his bike — riding to raise vital funds that directly support BC Cancer and help transform patient experiences across the province.
The Tour de Victoria on Aug. 16 — in which riders of all fitness levels can choose one of eight distances while supporting the BC Cancer Foundation — will be Brad’s second time mixing work with pleasure.
“I love cycling and I love working at BC Cancer. Combining the two was a no-brainer.”
Last year, Brad participated in the Tour de Cure, raising $50,000 with Team Victoria-ous, and it opened his eyes to the impact philanthropy has on supporting British Columbians facing cancer.
“I didn’t know much about the BC Cancer Foundation before, to be honest,” says Brad, who had been in his role at BC Cancer less than a year at the time.
“And then I saw some of the results from the funds that are raised such as the building across the street here in Victoria (the BC Cancer – Victoria Ernie & Yvonne Yakimovich Integrated Care and Research Pavilion, fully donor-funded through an $11.3 million BC Cancer Foundation campaign) and it’s pretty inspiring.”
Brad’s role is a new addition to the BC Cancer centres. “It quite exciting. Each centre has one or two of us in the role, with Victoria being the first to hire. Essentially, I work with both staff on the floor as well as leadership to drive continuous improvement at the centre.”
He’s currently working on a project aimed at reducing treatment delays or cancellations, which exacerbate the stress and anxiety patients experience.
“Patients undergoing chemotherapy experience delays for a variety of reasons, such as they are showing symptoms, or their lab results aren’t within a specific range. I’m working on implementing patient education, improved processes and workflows to try to reduce the number of delays, which ultimately improves the patient experience, patient safety and operational efficiency.”
It’s the first time Brad has worked in a role that directly impacts patients — which he says is especially gratifying.

Rain or shine it's all smiles when Brad rides with Team Victoria-ous.
“Everyone knows someone who has gone through cancer treatment or has been impacted by cancer — to be in the system and working towards improving the experience for patients feels pretty good.”
Equally rewarding is joining BC Cancer – Victoria staff, friends and family on the long, open road as part of Team Victoria-ous.
“There’s a real sense of camaraderie. It’s special when people come together with a shared goal of raising money to improve cancer care in Victoria, all during a fun and meaningful event.”
