A significant milestone for cancer care for B.C.’s Interior was reached today with the official groundbreaking for the new BC Cancer centre in Kamloops.
The new centre will dramatically expand access to treatment for patients across the Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap region — bringing radiation therapy to Kamloops for the first time and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for life-saving care.
“This is a major step forward in delivering the world-class care BC Cancer is known for to more communities in the Interior,” says Sarah Roth, President & CEO, BC Cancer Foundation.
“Supported by a BC Cancer Foundation $5 million fundraising campaign, progress on the upcoming BC Cancer centre in Kamloops brings new hope to patients and their families who deserve timely access to treatment without the added burden of travel.”
The Foundation is raising funds to help equip the Kamloops BC Cancer centre with advanced radiation technology. Radiation therapy is a critical part of treatment for nearly half of all cancer patients. By investing in cutting-edge equipment, the new centre will offer the latest care advancements, providing more effective and less toxic treatment options.
Community support is already growing. Wyatt McMurray, a longtime Cache Creek councillor and local business leader, has joined the Foundation’s Interior Transformation Council to rally support for the campaign. With decades of public service and deep roots in the region, Wyatt is helping ensure families across the Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap region receive the care they need, closer to home.
“I’ve seen how difficult it is when care is far away, and how transformative it can be when it’s close to home,” says Wyatt. “This new centre will make a meaningful difference for our region — I encourage the community to join me in supporting this vital project.”
The new BC Cancer centre is expected to open in 2028.
