VANCOUVER, B.C. – On Sunday, 770 cyclists trekked up Cypress Mountain for the 11th Annual Glotman·Simpson Cypress Challenge and raised over $440,000 to help change the outcome for British Columbians facing pancreatic cancer.
The event, benefitting the BC Cancer Foundation and pancreatic cancer research at BC Cancer, supports vital research into one of the deadliest cancers facing Canadians today.
“We are incredibly grateful to the hundreds of cyclists who pedaled and sweated their way to the top of Cypress Mountain,” says Sarah Roth, President & CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation. “Your extraordinary efforts are helping provide new hope to the many families impacted by pancreatic cancer across our province.”
This year, nearly 800 British Columbians will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; 75% of these patients won’t survive the first year, and less than 10% will survive five years.
“By bringing all of these people together, we are not only raising significant funds to help remedy this awful disease, we are also bringing vital awareness and education on how important this cause is in the fight against cancer,” says Geoffrey Glotman, managing principal at Glotman·Simpson Group of Companies.
Funds raised from the event will enable researchers to continue to improve the global understanding of this elusive disease, including examining full genome sequencing of tumours to identify the cause of gene mutations, developing new treatments, and improving both existing treatments and early detection.
Since 2008, Cypress Challenge has raised over $2.9 million towards finding solutions and enabling experts at BC Cancer to better understand and treat pancreatic cancer, ensuring people across B.C. impacted by the disease have access to the latest in research and care.
