VANCOUVER, B.C. – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced $10.23 million in federal funding to build a new nuclear medicine hub – the first-of-its-kind in Canada – at the University of British Columbia (UBC) named The Institute for Advance Medical Isotopes (IAMI). The construction of IAMI is valued at $31.8 million. Other contributors include the province of British Columbia, contributing $12.25 million, TRIUMF with $5.35 million, and BC Cancer and UBC each contributing $2 million.
IAMI will be part of TRIUMF at UBC campus and will bring together industry partners, researchers and clinicians to advance medical isotope production, drug and therapy development, clinical imaging and radiopharmaceutical research. TRIUMF is one of the world’s leading subatomic physics laboratories and Canada’s national particle accelerator centre.
On October 25th, the BC Cancer Foundation shared news of an inspiring $18.346 million gift made by an anonymous individual. This donation, one of the largest made to cancer in Canadian history, supports the IAMI facility and the BC Cancer lab that it will house, where researchers will use the facility to advance research and development of highly targeted therapeutic isotopes to treat metastatic cancers.
The IAMI facility will become a national hub of innovative cancer therapeutic research and development to find new solutions and to change outcomes for those facing an advanced cancer diagnosis.
Over the next five years, BC Cancer will scale-up scientific development of radioactive isotope treatments and launch a series of game-changing clinical trials.
