Redefining the Cancer Experience

The BC Cancer Foundation is proud to officially launch the Technology Transformation campaign — a $50 million fundraising initiative to bring a suite of state-of-the-art technology to BC Cancer – Vancouver, transforming cancer care and elevating outcomes for patients across the province.

Quietly launched in fall 2024, the campaign is already helping bring new, cutting-edge technology to BC Cancer, including a first-in-Canada Photon Counting CT scanner, with a Next Generation PET/CT scanner, Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM) unit and more exciting technologies soon to follow.

The suite of technologies is focused on redefining cancer care for patients through advanced imaging, diagnostics and high-precision radiation therapy to fuel highly personalized care and improve outcomes across the province.

“These technologies give us insights we’ve only dreamed of. They allow us to see cancer in remarkable detail, monitor how it’s responding to treatment and adapt care in real time. This is a powerful leap forward in precision oncology and it’s only possible because of the generosity of donors.”

– Dr. François Bénard, BC Cancer’s Senior Executive Director of Research

Every advancement means hope for more patients and their families.

Join us in taking the leap forward.

Campaign Priorities: Innovation Meets Impact

PET/CT scanner

Next Generation PET/CT Scanner

The gold standard in PET/CT scanning technology and a first in Canada, the Next Gen PET/CT can image the entire body from head to pelvis in a single frame in about two minutes (compared to the current standard of 40 minutes). This offers groundbreaking advantages for both patient care and research.

The Next Gen PET/CT will provide patients with:

  • Less radiation exposure to reduce side effects
  • Improved access to the best technology available
  • Timely access to drastically faster scans
  • More detailed images of their cancer
  • Improved comfort during the scanning process
Breast Cancer Research

Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM) Unit

This revolutionary new technology helps detect breast cancer by producing two images: a low-energy image similar to a conventional 2D mammogram and a high-energy image that can be analyzed to identify blood flow in the breast, a crucial indicator of cancer.

The CEM unit will enable BC Cancer experts to:

  • Improve breast imaging services for people with dense breasts
  • Provide more surveillance mammograms and an alternative to MRI for high-risk patients
  • Accurately monitor response to chemotherapy
  • Increase the overall capacity for breast imaging services in B.C.
Photon Counting CT Scanner

Photon Counting CT Scanner

Now operational at BC Cancer – Vancouver, this first-in-Canada machine uses leading-edge photon-counting technology to deliver more accurate imaging with less radiation exposure to patients.

The Photon Counting CT will deliver:

  • Superior image resolution and image quality
  • Lower radiation doses for patients
  • The ability to detect smaller lesions
  • Improved patient experience with faster scan times
  • Enhanced cancer research capabilities

Precision. Power. Possibility.

This is more than an investment in technology — it’s an investment in the future of cancer care in B.C.

Let’s take the leap forward together.
