VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries (CSCS) recently named the BC Cancer Foundation a winner in the category of Best Overall Corporate Governance at the second annual Excellence in Governance Awards (EGs). MTS Allstream was also named in the category that included nominees RBC, Encana, Tim Hortons and TransCanada.

“The Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries Best Overall Corporate Governance award gives our donors even more confidence when they support the BC Cancer Foundation,” says Douglas Nelson, President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation.

“The award recognizes the great working relationship between our team and the Foundation Board, as well as our ongoing work to improve our transparency, risk management processes and overall commitment to quality governance,” adds Nelson.

The BC Cancer Foundation’s accolade by CSCS follows similar acknowledgements in recent years by Charity Intelligence and Imagine Canada. The CSCS award recognizes companies that demonstrate a high level of effectiveness across three pillars: governance, risk and compliance. The final award winners were selected by a jury panel composed of seasoned and well-respected governance experts from across Canada, including honorary judge, Peter Dey, a well-known senior corporate executive and experienced corporate director. CSCS selected the judges to ensure representation from all aspects of the governance community including shareholder representatives, regulatory experts, leading academics and practitioners.

Among the notable comments from the panel of judges were the following:

“…In a climate of intense scrutiny by donors, the BC Cancer Foundation excels for its responsible, transparent and accountable behavior.”

“…The BC Cancer Foundation’s governance practices are excellent for a relatively small not-for-profit organization but also stand up well when compared to much larger private and public organizations.”

“The BC Cancer Foundation has a comprehensive understanding of a complex funding environment and exhibits robust reporting which clarifies the role of funders.”

The Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries is recognized as the most important organization for corporate governance professionals in Canada. CSCS strives to enhance the public's awareness of the importance of good governance and to be the voice of corporate governance professionals in Canada. The organization participates with other stakeholders, including capital markets participants, government bodies and regulators, in fostering a governance environment that sets Canada apart in the world.

The BC Cancer Foundation is the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency, enhancing care and supporting life-saving cancer research initiatives—benefitting patients in B.C. and beyond.
