BC Cancer Foundation has launched a $5 million fundraising campaign to bring life-saving cancer care closer to home for patients and families in Kamloops and surrounding communities. Funds raised will support equipping the new BC Cancer centre with the latest in cutting-edge technology.
Significantly, the five-storey, state-of-the-art facility will bring radiation therapy to Kamloops for the first time. Currently, patients must travel to Kelowna to receive this essential treatment – a journey that can be physically and emotionally exhausting during an already challenging time. With half of all cancer patients requiring radiation during their care, this new centre will transform how cancer is treated in the region.
“With support from our generous donor community, we will ensure that BC Cancer – Kamloops is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to deliver world class cancer care,” says Sarah Roth, President & CEO, BC Cancer Foundation.
The new BC Cancer centre in Kamloops will include:
- Radiation treatment and planning spaces, including three linear accelerator vaults and a CT simulator
- A dedicated outpatient ambulatory-care unit, with 10 exam rooms and two consultation rooms
- An additional MRI suite and patient check-in areas
Construction is expected to begin this year and be completed in 2028. Cancer cases in the region are projected to rise by 33% over the next 20 years. In its first year of operation, the centre will provide radiation therapy to approximately 1,000 patients.
The campaign launched at a special event in Kamloops – presented in partnership with Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union – where more than 80 community members gathered to hear from BC Cancer’s world-class leaders about the significant impact this new centre will have on cancer care in the region.
“This is our moment to create lasting change for Kamloops and the surrounding communities,” says Launi Skinner, CEO of First West Credit Union and vice chair of BC Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors. “Together, we will bring life-saving cancer care home – and show what’s possible when a community rallies around its own.”
