BC Cancer Foundation’s 8th annual Workout to Conquer Cancer fundraising challenge has raised $965,000 to support research and care advances at BC Cancer.
The month-long fundraiser brings together over 1,700 participants from across B.C., challenging them to be active for at least 30 minutes every day in May to fundraise for BC Cancer.
“Workout to Conquer Cancer exemplifies the power of community and the incredible impact we can have when we come together to support life-saving cancer research,” says Sarah Roth, President & CEO, BC Cancer Foundation.
Since the event began in 2017, Workout to Conquer Cancer has raised over $5.4 million. The funds have supported diverse projects including, establishing a provincial lung cancer screening program, advancing cutting-edge immunotherapy research for blood cancer patients and expanding genomic analysis for more personalized, effective treatments.
One family who knows the event’s impact is the family of Myles Lindsay. His immediate and extended family founded Workout to Conquer Cancer team Miles for Myles in 2021 as a way to distract and support as he faced a rare stomach cancer. Fifteen-year-old Myles passed on June 1, 2022, shortly after his second year of Workout, having proudly raised $225,000 – far exceeding his ambitious goal of $100,000.
Myles’ family has continued his legacy and Miles for Myles is the highest fundraising team in Workout to Conquer Cancer’s history, having raised over $500,000.
“Workout to Conquer is a way to keep Myles close, to make him proud, to make his terrible journey with cancer not be completely in vain,” shares Myles’ mom Lana Lindsay. “It’s a way to honour and cherish all of our memories of Myles and get out there and do something to make a difference for other families.”
