Matching Gift Raises $2 Million for BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre

The BC Cancer Foundation is pleased to announce the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society’s incredible $1 million donation match has been fully met – raising $2 million toward the Foundation’s $10 million campaign for the new BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre, thanks to the generosity of over 1,300 donors. 

“Firefighters understand the devastating toll cancer takes on families,” says Doug Petti, President of the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society. “Many of our colleagues have faced or will face a diagnosis from frequent exposure to carcinogens in the line-of-duty. We are proud to support the BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre, ensuring our community has access to the care they need.”

Set to open in 2030, BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre will expand world-class cancer care in the region and feature: 

• Ambulatory care rooms, chemotherapy chairs, an oncology pharmacy, radiation therapy and PET/CT 

• Space for leading-edge clinical trials, advancing research across all cancer types 

• Expanded capacity to ensure timely access to vital cancer care services 

Since its public launch in spring 2024, the campaign has received an incredible response from the Burnaby community, including a transformational gift from the McCarthy family, whose multi-generational commitment to cancer care is honoured in the centre’s name. 

The funds raised will help equip the centre with state-of-the-art technology and research facilities, ensuring care is brought closer to home for families while accelerating advancements in treatment innovation.
