Victoria, BC – Thrifty Foods is lending a generous hand to local BC Cancer patients by providing $10,000 worth of gift cards for patients in need.
Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, many patients are facing escalating and stressful financial constraints, on top of the pressures of treatment, when it comes to purchasing vital items, such as groceries.
Thrifty Foods’ kind gesture is helping alleviate this stress, removing one more burden for patients during an already challenging time.
“Supporting the communities where we live and work is always so important to us,” said Ralf Mundel, Vice President of Operations, Thrifty Foods. “During this particularly challenging time, we’re doing our part to ensure that safe, nutritious food is available for all members of the community, especially those most vulnerable.”
The gift cards allow patients with limited resources to have access to healthy foods while they undergo their treatment. The gift cards are administered through BC Cancer – Victoria to those most vulnerable.
“It’s obviously an unprecedented time right now and many patients are facing financial hardships, which can include purchasing essentials like groceries,” says Dr. Jason Hart, executive medical director, BC Cancer – Victoria. “We are touched by the generous support of Thrifty Foods – they are a shining example of how our community is coming together to help one another out in such a challenging time.”
No stranger to giving back to the community, Thrifty Foods has a longstanding history of supporting local cancer research and care. Since 1999 they have generously given over $2 million, including a $1 million donation in 2018 to help launch the campaign to bring a much-needed PET/CT scanner to BC Cancer – Victoria.
Ralf Mundel hopes their generosity will inspire others to make a positive impact in their community.
“We invite other businesses to join us in supporting BC Cancer patients,” he says. “Together, we can show everyone what hope looks like.”
Show your support to BC Cancer patients and healthcare heroes – your gift will be MATCHED!
Patients facing cancer are a vulnerable population at this time, and many are feeling increased financial pressure regarding accommodation, transportation to and from treatment and the costs of essentials like live-saving medication.
To support BC Cancer patients at risk, as well as the clinical experts who care for them, the BC Cancer Foundation has launched the BC Cancer COVID-19 Response Fund.
The fund supports emerging priority needs for BC Cancer including: providing patients with safe transportation to clinical appointments, delivery of life-saving medication to their homes and accommodation near a BC Cancer centre for those who travel for appointments.
In response to this urgent need, a long-standing family of supporters to BC Cancer Foundation has generously offered to match your donation towards the BC Cancer COVID-19 Response Fund, up to $100,000. Learn how you can help support our healthcare heroes and patients at risk.
