Record-setting $650,000 raised for Workout to Conquer Cancer

June 1, 2020

Over 2,200 strong from B.C. and beyond came together to move every day in May raising a record-setting $650,000 for BC Cancer Foundation’s Workout to Conquer Cancer.

Gyms and studios may have been closed, but that didn’t stop participants from breaking a sweat 31 days straight to support people facing cancer across the province.

“A huge thank you to everyone who committed to move every day with us under these challenging circumstances,” says Sarah Roth, president & CEO, BC Cancer Foundation. “We truly admire your dedication to changing the outcome for British Columbians facing cancer.”

Whether it was an online fitness class or an outdoor stroll (while keeping a safe distance from others), participants showed their innovative spirit and dedication to the cause. Their fundraising efforts will help advance research and care, providing new hope for families impacted by cancer in an unprecedented time where cancer patients are most vulnerable.

Workout’s top fundraising team is ‘Hot Tam Summer’, a group of 250 participants from across Canada, the United States and Great Britain who came together in honour of Tamara O’Brien, a dear friend who passed away from Stage IV melanoma last fall at just 22 years old.

Proving cancer research and care is a cause that resonates across the globe, the team’s motivation resulted in an incredible $60,000 raised.

Hot Tam Summer’s team captain, Arden Oh, was a close friend of Tamara’s.

“Tamara’s can-do attitude and true grit have inspired so many to live each day with purpose,” she says. “She has taught us the power of gratitude and that we should practice it every single day!”

Many individual participants pushed their fundraising goals to new heights as well: Geoff Bagshaw is Workout’s top individual fundraiser, having raised more than $17,000.
