“I speak about cancer. I ride my bike. I do these things because I want to change the story. I want a different ending.”
In 2008, Patrick Sullivan lost his young son Finn to an extremely rare form of cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma. A few months later, he was approached by two close friends: “They told me about this fundraising bike ride to Seattle, the Ride to Conquer Cancer. They wanted to put a team in it – and do it in honour of Finn. That was the start of Team Finn.”
Every member of Team Finn is inspired by a little boy who lived every moment of his short life to the fullest. Their distinctive pink jerseys read “Run. Jump. Bounce. Dance. Sing. Love. Smile. Ride,” words that celebrate Finn’s approach to every day.
Finn showed how to live life with courage and joy, and his example has helped Team Finn achieve extraordinary success in raising funds for the BC Cancer Foundation. In just three years, they have raised over $1 million to support cancer research. As Finn’s father says, “Doctors couldn’t change Finn’s story. ‘Incurable’ was his ending. If I could change that for somebody else, then every moment of time is worth it.”

30 Minute Hit makes a difference in the lives of thousands of women. Through their ‘30 Minute Hit Kicks the *&%! Out of Cancer’ fundraiser, co-founders Deanna & Jackson Loychuk invited those same women to give back – and giving back was exactly what those women did! “We knew this one-of-a-kind event would inspire, empower, and touch everyone involved,” says Deanna, “but would also – more importantly – raise a lot of money for a very worthy cause.” Throughout the fundraiser, all 30 Minute Hit members were invited to kick the *&%! out of women’s cancers and fight for their mother, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother or friend. With every jab, cross, front kick and uppercut on BOB (Body Opponent Bag), 30 Minute Hit members helped the efforts to uncover the cure for women’s cancers by raising money based on how many times they completed the 30 Minute Hit circuit. Not only did they sweat, burn, learn and smile their way to results they never thought possible, they challenged and motivated themselves by fighting for thousands of women battling cancer in Canada. Once all was said and done, over $54,000 was raised to support breast and ovarian cancer research.

In conjunction with their one year anniversary, C:EHKO Hair Concepts hosted ‘In memory of…’ at Terracotta Modern Chinese Restaurant in Gastown. ‘In memory of…’ is a fundraiser in support of cancer research at the BC Cancer Foundation. This cause is near and dear to one of the co-founders of C:EHKO Hair Concepts, Farshad Shafiekhani, as his father-in-law fell victim to the disease amidst the salon’s grand opening the previous year. In turn, C:EHKO Hair Concepts decided to hold a fundraiser to not only support cancer research in BC, but also to celebrate the memories of those who have lost the battle to cancer and honour those who are currently living with the disease. The evening included red carpet treatment upon arrival, a cupcake tower with scrumptious treats, a silent auction consisting of an assortment of donated items and plenty of mixing and mingling amongst the guests while the DJ exchanged musical entertainment with a live performance by The Stumblers Inn. Family, friends, colleagues and connections came out in strong support at this exciting event, to the generous tune of over $5,300. Photo provided by Marvin Vasquez Photography

Jim Wohlford turned his life’s passion into a fundraising tournament:
“Wohlford's Beach Volleyball for Cancer tournament originally started as a celebration for my family and friends while I was going through treatment for esophageal cancer in 2009. Volleyball is my passion and I promised myself that I had to play with every ounce of energy I had during treatment. Some days it was all that got me through. Trust me when I say that it wasn't easy. But I found that getting my mind off my treatments, socializing with friends and playing the sport I've loved for the last 25 years is what got me through it. Why should I wait, why should anyone wait. Lives change, passions change, circumstances change. Why wait?”
“Cancer has touched the lives of so many. Without the support of the BC Cancer Foundation, mine may not have been the success story it is today. My one year cancer free was on March 12, 2011 and with the tournament growing each year, I can only hope that we will one day find a cure.”

The sudden death of Dennis Deakin in 2008 left his friends and family in shock. The father of three daughters was well-loved and admired by many in Port Alberni, so it is only fitting that this same community gathered to create a fundraising event in his honour.
For three years, the Dennis Deakin Memorial Golf Tournament has given his family, colleagues and friends a chance to gather and celebrate his life. As his wife Janet says, “Dennis was a warm and genuine man and was so grateful to all the medical staff and caregivers at the BC Cancer Agency. He had a fantastic smile, and even at the end of his treatments, he was happy and thankful for all of the wonderful care he received.”
“After he was diagnosed, the whole family became advocates for early detection research. We chose the BC Cancer Foundation as our charity of choice, because we know the Foundation funds incredible early detection research at the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre.”
