“We believe you only need three things in life: a companion, enough money, and friends. Everything else you should use to help others.”

Jimmy and Doris Ho moved to Vancouver from Hong Kong in 1996 to retire and enjoy the relaxed West Coast lifestyle. But in October of 1997, they knew something was wrong.

“Jimmy had a lump in his neck,” Doris recalls.  “At first, we thought it would go away.  But we were dancing at a family party and Jimmy suddenly had a terrible headache.  His eye was even bulging a bit.”

Jimmy adds, “I was eventually diagnosed with early stage lymphoma.” Following chemotherapy and medication, Jimmy was given a clean bill of health.

“We were just so grateful, we had to do something to give back,” Jimmy says.  “We know that research takes money.  So, on top of our regular contributions, we decided to include a gift to the BC Cancer Foundation in our will. It was so easy — we just went to our lawyer’s office and made it happen.”

As Jimmy and Doris approach their 50th wedding anniversary, the couple are back to enjoying their retirement — together.

    A Gift in Your Will

    Discovery needs willing partners

The BC Cancer Foundation funds leading-edge research by scientists at the BC Cancer Agency who are discovering new and better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent the disease. This vital knowledge is improving – and saving – the lives of men, women and children in communities throughout British Columbia.

Cancer research can take years of painstaking, diligent work. Our researchers need to know their studies will continue to be funded for as long as it takes to find the next breakthrough. And that’s where you can help – by remembering the BC Cancer Foundation in your will.

    A lasting partnership

By arranging for a bequest and telling us about it now, you can help us plan the life-saving research of tomorrow and fully commit to funding our scientists’ critical work today.

    What is a bequest?

A bequest is a gift made in your will – and a highly effective way of carrying on your support for the people and causes that mattered most to you during your lifetime.

How do I include a gift in my will?

Whether or not you already have a will, the easiest way to include a gift in your will is to get professional help from a legal advisor experienced in preparing wills. If you need help finding a suitable legal advisor, we will be very happy to help you. We can also help ensure that your gift will be used as you intend by providing suggested bequest wording for your will, which you can bring to your legal advisor.

    What’s in a Name?

When including a gift to the BC Cancer Foundation in your will or any other document, it is extremely important that you use our correct legal name: BC Cancer Foundation. Since many charities have similar names, changing even one word in the name, such as using “society” instead of “foundation,” can lead to confusion. It could even result in costs to your estate, or your gift failing. To avoid this, when planning your gift, please make sure you use our full legal name.

    BC Cancer Foundation
    Registration number: 11881 8434 RR0001

    Thank You.
