PATIENT AND FAMILY COUNSELLING PROGRAM

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer often comes with intense emotions. Studies show that 35-45% of all cancer patients experience significant emotional distress at some point. This is also true for family, friends and caregivers.

Patient and Family Counselling (PFC) Services play an integral role in improving the emotional health and well-being of patients treated at BC Cancer and their family members.

HELPING FAMILIES COPE WITH CANCER

With a myriad of challenges associated with cancer diagnosis and recovery, counsellors are available to help patients clarify concerns, express emotions and develop mechanisms for coping with life changes resulting from their illness.

Anxiety and depression among children who have a parent with cancer is a growing concern in the cancer care landscape. We know that when cancer patients are coping well, their kids do better too, but the burden of cancer often impacts both parents and children.

ACCESS TO RESOURCES

By supporting BC Cancer’s Patient and Family Counselling Services, more families and children will have access to the emotional support and resources needed to cope throughout their cancer journey, ensuring families are able to connect with the highest level of expertise available.
